Alex Chilton show at City Winery

I was just trolling through the City Winery website and noticed that Marshall will be performing at the Alex Chilton "tribute" show on July 28th. A whole bunch of performers are announced. I hope Marshall goes on late cuz I have tix for Willie Nelson and Levon Helm at Radio City that night.

Thanks, Mike -- I had just noticed this myself and came on to post the info. Luckily I don't have Levon Helm tickets, so I can be there nice and early! This makes up for me having to miss the Aug 18th show....

I can't tell you how frustrated I am about missing the Aug 18th show. I'm committed to spending the week in New Orleans, helping to lead a teen service project, rebuilding houses etc. All that good karma would go down the toilet if I bagged it for a concert!

I was there -- what a fun evening! Naturally Marshall was the highlight of the evening for me -- trust MC to dig up a couple of fantastic little-known Alex Chilton solo songs that were so incredible, they were worth the price of admission. (Had a quick chat with Marshall after he show and he cracked me up, saying that he couldn't believe those songs when he first listened to them -- the songs were "so good it was just stupid." And of course he was right, I knew exactly what he meant.)

Marshall also sang back-up with the marvelous Ronnie Spector, an unexpected treat. The joy she brought to that stage was simply amazing. And I think he had a tasty little guitar solo during her first song, but I was sitting way the hell over to the side of the stage and couldn't see half the people on stage. (I feel fairly certain that those obstructed view seats weren't my original seats I'd booked -- but the place was swarming with videographers, so I think certain seats were removed, necessitating this extra table stuck at the side of the room.... Good news is, there may be a film of this shown eventually.)

The Box Tops were another great part of the evening. Those guys were rocking out as if they'd never missed a beat, all these years down the road. Of course it helps to have had great material!

I also enjoyed Sondre Lerche. Of all the singers, he captured something especially Chiltonesque, or at least like young Alex Chilton, yearning and soulful. He is one cute little hipster.
