This week’s Bottomless Pit is kind of a hodge-podge, a grab bag, etc. It starts out with me complaining about the music at my new health club, then later we hear some tracks from a great album of experimental music and ambient soundscapes by three ex-members of Paul Revere and The Raiders, seriously, and then finally I turn the whole thing over to my iPod. This week on the Bottomless Pit, an hour long salute to my Mother’s favorite musical instrument, and possibly the coolest musical instrument ever, the vibraphone! The vibraphone has a shiny, metallic, electric, pulsating sound that always grabs my attention. We’ll hear some film noir-ish Jazzy stuff, some classic Philly Soul music, and from luminaries like Lionel Hampton, Cal Tjader, Mary Wells, and much more.

This Saturday night, for the first time in 2013, it’ll be “All 45 RPM Night” on the show, and it’ll be an especially nice sounding one because I’m using my brand-new 40 yr. old Thorens TD126, with a Grado cartridge (made in Brooklyn)! The show starts with 2 songs about Los Angeles that haunt my thoughts whenever I visit there. Now they can haunt yours too! Plus, a salute to the great, and now sadly, late Hugh McCracken (a Guitar Hero in my world), AND lots of records recorded in the great city of Detroit by The Parliaments, Timmy Shaw, The Marvelettes, Jr. Walker, and of course, much more.
